Most businesses do not need a full-time legal department, but they do need legal advice regularly: a supplier contract to review, a customer who will not pay, a shareholder question, a dispute that is starting to escalate. Paying hourly for each of these makes legal advice something you avoid until it is too late.

A retainer changes that. For an agreed monthly fee, our directors handle the agreed scope of work for your business. Because we know your business, contracts and people, advice is quicker, more practical and more consistent.

The retainer brings together our commercial litigation, contract drafting, company law and corporate insolvency practices under one arrangement, so one firm handles the legal side of your business.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

General information only, not legal advice on your specific matter. For advice on your situation, speak to one of our directors.

What is a legal retainer?+
It is an arrangement where your business pays a fixed monthly fee and, in return, the firm handles an agreed scope of legal work for you each month. It works like having an in-house lawyer, without the cost of employing one.
What does the monthly fee include?+
The scope is agreed with you upfront and depends on your business. It usually covers contract work, collections, company matters and general advice. Larger matters, such as a defended trial, are discussed separately so there are no surprises.
Who is a retainer suited to?+
Businesses that regularly need contracts reviewed, accounts collected or legal questions answered, and that would rather have a firm that knows them than start from scratch each time.
Can we end the retainer?+
The notice period is set out in the retainer agreement and agreed with you before you sign.
Do you only act for businesses in Nelspruit?+
No. Much of the work is done by email, phone and video call, so we can act for businesses elsewhere in South Africa. Court work is mainly in Mpumalanga.
